Tutorial 2 & 3: Research skills and presenting scientific informationPosted by Colin Lam in Academic skills, English for Science![]() By Vaughan Leiberum from Cape Town, South Africa (Flag – Great Britain (cropped)) [CC-BY-2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0)], via Wikimedia Commons I took some time reading through the learning contracts you all have filled in, and I’m glad to see that most of you are determined to use English more than 80% in those mentioned situations. I wondered, however, what made some of you feel less confident in some group work. Feel free to share in the comment area below and see if others are also having the same concern. Today (Wednesday), we have looked at different types of documentaries and have seen two examples: one from BBC and other from a previous student in this course. We even took off trying to create a short video using PhotoStory 3 and a given script. Remember to upload a copy on our YouTube site (link available in the PowerPoint file on blackboard), and I’ll share the link here later so that we can comment on each others’ work.

Tutorial 1: Reading StrategiesPosted by Colin Lam in Academic skills, English for ScienceIt’s nice to see you all this week! This week we started the course by looking at different qualities of good scientists. And we had some nice discussion. We also took the chance to have a look at a couple of samples of scientific writing and see how language use differs when we have different target readers and different writing purposes. How important are English communication skills for scientists? How important are English communication skills for you? What did you get from the reading tasks in class? Please let us know by leaving a comment below. Please keep the comments positive and constructive, and choose one of your classmates to respond to, saying whether you agree with their point of view and why. Remember, it is through practice we can improve our language skills. Please make a lot of noise here! Welcome to the course blog which we can use to share our views / comments regarding the course materials that we go through each week. I’m looking forward to some fruitful and exciting discussion about communication in science here!
